From The Former Prez;
My last official act as president was to thank you for trusting me with the responsibility of overseeing our club for the last year. I felt the need to deliver a heartfelt speech – but music is more important. So here are some words in print. Think of them as liner notes.

I was bitten by the folk music bug when I was in grade school and I still think three chords at a time. It seems to me that every musical form that develops and enjoys its day in the sun grows out of the folk tradition. Every form evolves and become more complex over time. Eventually, every form becomes so complex that people turn away in search of something more personal and simple. The musical heart returns home and folk is that home.

Whenever the sophisticated commercial standard form becomes too distant and cold our three-chord wellspring provides soul from which the next musical development grows. We preserve that wellspring and pass it to the next generation of creativity. We might never understand the places these artists will take their music but we may know with certainty that the subsequent musical generation will start with Wildwood Flower or something very much like it.

Our traditional form can not survive in some museum environment. It can only survive in the hearts of musicians. It can only be passed from living soul to living soul. That’s our artistic job. We are not the popular artists of the future. We are their inspiration.

-Gary
